Intentions
Use long exposure and double exposure to capture the feelings of dissociation ("zoning out"), derealisation (feeling like the world isn't real), and depersonalisation (feeling like you aren't real).
Contrast ghostly passers-by with a solid subject to further illustrate the loneliness felt by the subject.
Successes
The long exposure shots worked well. It took time to figure out how slow a shutter speed to use, but this resulted in largely successful images.
The public had no issue with our shooting - a homeless man even asked to join in, and we were able to have a conversation with him about what we were doing (see final image).
Many of the pictures convey feelings of derealisation and depersonalisation. Who are the ghosts in the images? Who is real?
Improvements
The long exposure shots with the subject moving her hands in front of and away from her eyes did not come out as I had hoped - there was just too much blur. I then thought I could take a photo of just her face and another with her hands covering her face, and overlay these in Photoshop as a form of double exposure. Unfortunately, this also didn't work. I would like to try this again, but would need to plan the shots more carefully.
