Proposal - One Blue Eye

Module: Creative Production in a Local Context (APME 301) - 08/11/2023

Client: One Blue Eye

Student: Liz Jenkin

I plan to create a set of small zines for you to give to your customers and the wider community. In addition to providing you with a printed set, I will give you a digital copy so you can share them on social media or print further copies if you wish to. Truro College will organise a workshop at Mount Pleasant Eco Park, and I will print the zines using the Risograph – an environmentally conscious method of printing using soy-based inks.

A good example of a Riso-printed zine is the Roots Zine. The limited colour palette results in bold graphics with a retro aesthetic, much like one of your recent Facebook posts:

You can view the print service here: https://www.mpecopark.co.uk/roots-press/print-service/

When we met, you mentioned that you like things to look “thrown together” instead of polished. Riso prints are a great way of achieving that artisanal, handmade look, which I think will fit well with the One Blue Eye brand.

In consultation with you, we can choose some specific content to be included; the zines could include product and workshop highlights to promote One Blue Eye or act as creative examples to show the public how they can use plastic waste to create something new. If there are any local communities you wish to appeal to, please let me know. They could be residents, businesses, and schools, as well as any surfers who frequent the local beaches.

To create the content for the zines, I will draw on my skills in analogue photography and produce artwork that focuses on eco-friendly processes like cyanotypes. These produce a rich Prussian blue image when exposed to light, which aligns with the One Blue Eye brand and its coastal setting.

These are some examples of my existing cyanotype work. The first image was made on the beach and is more experimental and abstract. The second image shows the tonal ranges you can find within cyanotypes from photographs. I am interested in furthering this work by using plastic waste to create artwork, for example, using plastic bags to create an impression of a jellyfish in the ocean.  These images can then be used in your zines. By including artwork made from plastic, the zines will aim to engage the community in the process of plastic recycling as a creative tool.

Additionally, while I have experience with cyanotypes on paper and fabric, I want to explore the possibility of printing on plastic, in line with your interest in using larger pieces of plastic. I will also consider other eco-friendly photographic methods, being mindful of potential environmental impact. This art will primarily appeal to individuals seeking meaningful, statement-driven pieces, and could also serve as inspiration for recycling plastic waste creatively.

The end products will be:

·       A set of Riso-printed zines containing plastic-based artwork and information for the community (specific contents to be decided).

·       A digital copy of the zines and any material created for you to use on social media.

·       A statement art piece printed on plastic (provided I can find a suitable way to do so).
